Although the movie itself wasn’t something to write home about, the Return to Silent Hill soundtrack, as is the case with all Silent Hill products, was exceptional, bringing back the legendary Akira Yamaoka for the score.
There is good news in that regard for music collectors, as Laced Records has just opened pre-orders on the limited edition 2LP set. According to their announcement:
- 2LP set features 29 specially remastered tracks handpicked by Yamaoka
- Exclusive Edition features ‘Fog World’ blend effect discs in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with spot gloss

Working with director Christophe Gans, Yamaoka has reworked the sound of Silent Hill 2 for the film score, taking ideas from the game, and reshaping them for the film. It featured reimagined versions of iconic tracks, such as “Chasing Laura” and “Brookhaven Hospital”.
“The horror of SILENT HILL is not merely unpleasant or violent. There is always something fragile, human, and irretrievably beautiful mixed within it. Refusing to deny that has remained unchanged since the beginning,” Yamaoka explains.
Yamaoka approached the music through the three principles he had developed while working on Silent Hill over a decade: not deciding music purely through emotion, blurring the line between music and environmental sound and refusing to reject beauty. This has helped make the Silent Hill music iconic and memorable, with fans able to recall various leitmotifs from the games.

“The goal was never to replay the game’s music as it was,” Yamaoka explains. “Instead, the challenge was to reinterpret it—to alter its meaning, its distance, and its placement—so it could breathe within the film’s sense of time, imagery, and the inner lives of the characters. It was not a quotation, but a reimagining.”
You can pre-order the limited edition Return to Silent Hill double vinyl by Akira Yamaoka over on Laced Records for £36 in the UK ($42 in the United States).
