The reviews for Resident Evil have started trickling in and it currently sits at a healthy and green 79 on Metacritic from over 16 reviews.
From most of the reviewers like Polygon, TheWrap and IGN, the movie looks to be a frightening, funny and absolutely bloody retelling of the beloved videogame series with Austin Abrams being universally praised for his performance. In fact, some people have even compared him to Bruce Campbell’s young debut in Evil Dead, with this movie also sharing some comedy-horror roots.
The story follows Bryan, a medical courier who is tasked with delivering something to Raccoon City. What should be a typical run turns into a desperate fight for survival against bloodthirsty, mutated creatures.
As we’ve previously said, we like that it’s moving away from some of the main cast of the series, as there are interesting stories to be told around Resident Evil’s wider world. In this respect, it reminds me a lot of Resident Evil 7 where we got a different look at the horrors present in this world through the eyes of the now iconic Ethan Winters, who also wasn’t involved with the original cast of characters.
We can’t wait to see the movie ourselves when it releases in theatres on September 18, 2026. It is directed by Zach Cregger, who previously directed the critically acclaimed Weapons.
