The official trailer has just been released for Zach Cregger’s (Weapons) Resident Evil, showing off more of the movie’s premise and characters, as well as the scares viewers can expect.
The story follows Bryan, a medical courier who is tasked with delivering something to Raccoon City. What should be a typical run turns into a desperate fight for survival against bloodthirsty, mutated creatures.
I personally like that we are moving away from some of the main cast of the series, as there are interesting stories to be told around Resident Evil’s wider world. In this respect, it reminds me a lot of Resident Evil 7 where we got a different look at the horrors present in this world through the eyes of the now iconic Ethan Winters, who also wasn’t involved with the original cast of characters.
Like the game, I do hope we get a great cameo by the end, potentially that of Leon, Ada, Claire or Jill. Chris would not canonically be in Raccoon City during this time, as he was instead investigating Umbrella in Europe.
It really feels like a lot of thought has been given to highlight just how ruthless this outbreak was, and how horrifying the mutations could be. What stands out the most, however, is lead Austin Abrams‘ performance, whose character looks to be rather likeable so far. In my opinion, he was the most interesting performance in Weapons, so I am excited to see more of him in this film.
Resident Evil is being filmed for IMAX and will be released in theatres on September 18, 2026. It is directed by Zach Cregger, who previously directed the critically acclaimed Weapons.
