Cory Barlog, Santa Monica Studio’s creative head, revealed that the next God of War game featuring Kratos will connect directly to God of War Laufey.

This was confirmed during San Diego Comic-Con, where the cast and creators behind God of War Laufey presented a panel, revealing some new information and addressing some fan questions.

“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next, Phranque has been around since the beginning. It’s interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.”

Cory Barlog – SDCC God of War Laufey panel

We personally really like this approach, as God of War has one of the most interesting worlds in games, featuring some great characters and mythologies. This also makes Laufey an important game for the franchise, helping it escape the monotony of a standalone prequel where the stakes don’t matter because you already know the outcome.

We know people usually aren’t fans of meaningless character deaths where they can easily come back, but it would be iconic to see Kratos reunite with his wife once again and for them to take the fight to some of the bigger threats.

We also believe that the characters we meet during Laufey may become important players in the stories to come. Phranque particularly keeps being mentioned, so we wouldn’t be surprised if they play a bigger part in the franchise going forward.

That wasn’t the only important new piece of info, as the team closed the panel with the surprise reveal that God of War Laufey will be released on the PlayStation 5 systems February 16, 2027. It is much sooner than expected, which makes sense considering that the marketing has been substantial for this game already.
