Medium Rare Plunges You Into a Grungy, Cannibalistic Nightmare With Turn-Based Gameplay

Plunge into a grungy, cannibalistic nightmare in Medium Rare, a unique looking game that mixes its turn-based dice combat with tense and horrifying encounters.

Medium Rare is perhaps one of the more interesting looking games to be revealed recently, a turn-based survival dungeon crawler that is set in a world where food is running out and cannibalism has become the surviving force.

The game tasks players with rescuing their wife after she has been taken to a human meat processing plant. To rescue her, players will trek through a treacherous mountain filled with cannibals, the infected and mutated animals.

The gameplay follows an almost rogue-like progression, where the player must choose how far to go as the parts you scavenge can only be meaningfully used if you successfully extract back to base. These parts can be used to upgrade your equipment before the next turn.

The combat itself seems to be a fun mix of turn-based combat with dice mechanics, where every bullet is a valuable resource and combining different weapons can create useful synergies. Throughout it all, players will also have to manage their inventory carefully as they can’t carry everything they find.

The premise alone is interesting, but what makes it really stand out in our opinion is just how unique the visuals look with a grungy, low-bit style with posterized elements that are dipped in a sickly green palette.

Medium Rare is currently in development for PC, with a release date scheduled for 2027. It is being developed by ExeCo, a company founded by two teachers, Payne Robinson and Peter Tinaglia, who aim to make you forget real life through immersion in terrifyingly realised worlds.
