It is not exactly news that the games industry is going through a difficult period, with record layoffs that have happened this year, with more to come. Despite that, games are still being made, and demand for Gamescom 2026 has broken records.
Gamescom announced that for the first time, every exhibition area has been booked, despite them having expanded for more room last year. It has been so strong in fact, that the organisers are looking to expand Gamescom again in 2027.
That gamescom is completely booked up is a strong signal for the entire industry, we only just expanded the area last year, so are all the more pleased with the increasing demand.

It definitely is an encouraging milestone, especially during such a shaky period. The sold-out event of course doesn’t erase these problems, but it does show that companies are still developing games, and investing in bringing them directly to players.
The lineup itself grew this year, with even Konami, Tencent and Embark joining as exhibitors. This is alongside those previously confirmed, including Xbox, Nintendo, Capcom and more. Not to mention Geoff Keighley will once again host their Opening Night Live showcase with new game premieres.
Despite its popularity and demand, however, Gamescom still remains inaccessible to many, due to cost of tickets, travel and accommodation. The demand is now higher than ever, but accessibility issue is what needs to be addressed as part of any future expansion, ensuring more people can actually experience the event.
Still, it is good news, as it shows just how resilient this industry is and how passionate its creators are, giving us a lot of great games to look forward to in the future. It remains to be seen if the major launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 can pump more money into an industry that needs it.
