Eidos-Montréal has just released a behind the scenes video for Guardians of the Galaxy, where the art director reveals the inspiration behind its character designs and how they had to find a balance between inspiration and originality
Notable Highlights:
- Bruno began by exploring the inspiration behind the bold outfit of Star-Lord (a.k.a. Peter Quill) which is littered with keepsakes from his 80s childhood, including tributes to his namesake and favourite musicians.
- He then explored their take on Drax the Destroyer whose distinct circular tattoos tell the tale of his extensive combat history, each circle marking a past victory that also mirrors the architecture of his home planet of Katath.
- The character design team wanted to create a strong and imposing look for Gamora, the deadliest woman in the Galaxy, which led them to reference a striking black and white suit from earlier comics, with deadly changes that allow her to be battle-ready at the drop of a hat.
- Finally, Bruno explained how the team was influenced to use certain visual choices in the designs to further emphasize the bond between Rocket and Groot, with Rocket wearing a bead of Groot in his goatee and Groot wearing an armoured harness designed by Rocket which allows Rocket to use him as a turret during combat.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Playstation 5 and Playstation 4 on the 26th of October. Whilst there will be a Nintendo Switch release as well, it will be limited to streaming via cloud.
